QR codes in retail stores: what actually gets scanned, fixture by fixture

Generic "put a QR code in your store" advice ignores that shelf-edge, checkout, fitting rooms and windows are four different scanning moments. A fixture-by-fixture guide to size, placement, CTAs and honest, sourced measurement.

Why "put a QR code in your store" isn't a placement strategy

Search for advice on retail QR codes and you get the same seven-point listicle everywhere: put codes on shelf tags, put them at checkout, put them in the window, watch sales grow. Nobody says how big a shelf-edge code needs to be compared with a checkout code, why a fitting room is a different scanning moment to a shop window, or how many codes is too many for one aisle. That gap is where most in-store QR campaigns actually fail: not because QR codes do not work in retail, but because "a QR code in the store" is treated as one placement instead of four or five, each with a different distance, a different attention span, and a different job to do.

A 2026 State of QR Codes report from Uniqode, based on a survey of 524 US marketers and 1,000 US consumers alongside 188 million scans on its own platform, found that 98 per cent of marketers who used QR codes in the past year reported a positive impact, and 56 per cent expected a revenue lift from them. The same report found that only 12 per cent of those marketers actually measure that revenue impact. That gap between belief and measurement is the honest starting point for a retail QR strategy: codes clearly do something, but "it felt like it worked" is not a placement plan, and it will not tell you whether the shelf-edge code or the checkout code was the one doing the work.

This guide skips the pep talk and goes fixture by fixture: shelf-edge, point of sale, fitting rooms, and window displays, with what actually changes at each one, what to link to, and how to avoid drowning a store in codes nobody scans.

Shelf-edge signage: a passing glance, not a browsing session

A shelf-edge QR code competes with everything else on the shelf, and shoppers do not linger. In an eye-tracking study of a supermarket biscuit aisle, Ipsos found shoppers spent an average of 70 seconds in front of the display but fixated on only around 15 per cent of the items on offer. A shelf code is not read, it is glanced at and either scanned on reflex or skipped. That changes what the code needs to do: it has to be legible at a stride, and the reason to scan it has to be obvious without reading a paragraph next to it.

Size it for the distance a shopper is actually standing, using the same 10:1 sizing rule that applies everywhere else: at arm's length browsing a shelf, that is comfortably larger than the code on a business card, closer to the size recommended for a shop window. Undersizing is the single most common shelf-edge mistake, because a code that looked fine printed on a sheet of A4 in the office shrinks to something illegible once it is cut down to a shelf-tag strip.

The call to action matters more here than anywhere else in the store. "Scan for more information" gives a browsing shopper no reason to stop. "Scan for the allergen list," "scan to see it in five colours," or "scan for a 10 per cent off code" gives them one. Keep it to a single, specific reason, because a shopper deciding between two products is not going to read three lines of copy to find out which of three reasons applies to them.

It is also worth knowing that the barcode already on that product's packaging plays by different rules entirely. GS1's own 2D Barcodes at Retail Point-of-Sale guideline (the technical spec behind the industry's Sunrise 2027 move to 2D barcodes, which we cover in more depth in our GS1 Digital Link guide) sizes its codes for a fixed-position laser scanner reading at a set distance, not a shopper's phone at arm's length. That standard also specifies that a QR Code needs a quiet zone four times its module size, against just one module size for a GS1 DataMatrix at the same density, which is a real, citable reason some shelf-tag pilots use DataMatrix rather than QR where space is at a premium. If your shelf-edge code is aimed at a shopper's phone rather than the till scanner, none of that POS-scanning math applies to you; size it for a human at a stride, not for a laser reading a fixed spot.

Point of sale and checkout: the one place shoppers are actually waiting

Checkout is the opposite scanning moment to a shelf. A shopper standing in a queue is not moving past your code, they are stationary, mildly bored, and holding their phone anyway to pay or to check the time. That captive, low-distraction attention is worth using deliberately, because it is the one moment in the store where you can ask for something that takes more than a glance: joining a loyalty scheme, leaving a Google review, or registering a product warranty are all better suited to a checkout counter than a shelf, because they need thirty seconds of attention rather than a reflex tap.

Two things go wrong at checkout more than anywhere else. The first is putting a code where scanning it would hold up the queue: next to the card reader is convenient for the till but hostile to everyone behind that shopper, so a counter-edge or bag-drop location, somewhere a shopper can scan before or after paying rather than during, works better. The second is stacking too many asks onto one code. Choose the single highest-value action for that specific store or season, because a shopper who has just paid is not going to complete four different requests off the back of one code.

Fitting rooms: a private, captive moment most retailers waste

Fitting rooms are the most underused fixture in a physical store, and it is not close. A shopper alone in a changing room has already committed real effort to being there, has their phone out more often than not, and is undistracted by the rest of the shop floor for a full minute or more. Almost nobody puts a QR code there.

The useful placements are narrow and specific rather than promotional. A code that lets someone request a different size without getting dressed and walking the floor solves a genuine problem and gets scanned because it is useful, not because it is marketing. A code linking to styling suggestions for the item just tried on, or a short size-guide or care-instructions page, works for the same reason. Save the loyalty-signup or review-request ask for checkout; a fitting room is not the place to add friction to what should be a quick, functional scan, and a shopper trying on clothes in a small mirrored room is not in the mood for a marketing pitch.

Window displays: reach after the shop is closed

A window or storefront display code is scanned by two very different audiences: people walking past during opening hours, and people walking past after the shop has shut. The second group is easy to forget and is exactly why a window code earns its keep even on a slow retail day, because a shop that closes at six still has a storefront working for it at nine. Size it for the same distance as any wall poster viewed from the pavement, per the 10:1 rule, and be deliberate about glare: glass reflects streetlights and headlights at night, and a code applied to the inside of the glass rather than printed flat against it will pick up less of that glare than one stuck directly to the surface.

Because a window code is often the only touchpoint available outside opening hours, point it at something that works without a person behind the counter: click-and-collect, an online order, or a booking page, rather than a call to action that assumes staff are there to help.

How many codes is too many for one store

The failure mode nobody writes about is not "QR codes don't work in retail," it is a store with a code on every shelf tag, every poster, and every till receipt, all competing for the same distracted shopper. When every fixture asks for a scan, none of them stand out, and shoppers learn to tune all of them out together, which is worse for the codes that would genuinely have earned a scan on their own.

The fix is a hierarchy rather than a blanket rollout. Decide the one dominant ask per fixture type, shelf-edge for product information, checkout for loyalty or reviews, fitting room for size and styling help, window for after-hours access, rather than repeating the same generic "scan for more" code at every one of them. A store with four well-chosen codes doing four distinct jobs will outperform a store with forty identical ones.

Static or dynamic: why a multi-fixture rollout needs dynamic codes

A single shop with one shelf-edge code is a small enough problem that a static code, printed once and never changed, might just about survive. A chain with dozens of stores, seasonal promotions, and shelf-tags that need to point somewhere different every quarter is a different problem entirely, and it is the one dynamic QR codes exist to solve. If a promotion ends, a product goes out of stock, or a landing page moves, a static code printed on a laminated shelf tag is stuck until someone reprints and re-laminates it in every store that carries it. A dynamic code changes destination centrally, in minutes, with the same printed code still on the shelf.

That matters even more once you are running the same fixture type across many locations. For a multi-location or franchise rollout, a single QR code design can route to a per-store landing page or promotion without printing a different code for every branch, which is the only realistic way to keep hundreds of shelf-edge and checkout codes current without a reprint budget that scales with your store count.

Measuring what fixture-level scanning actually tells you

Resist the urge to average scans across the whole store and call it a scan rate. QR scan volume follows a power-law distribution, not a bell curve: an analysis of over five million scans across more than 500 creators by QRLynx found a mean of 44 scans per code but a median of just 2, with 34 per cent of codes never scanned at all and the top 1 per cent of codes responsible for the bulk of total volume. A single high-traffic checkout code can drag a storewide average up so far that it hides a shelf-edge code that never got a fair shot, or a fitting-room code that quietly outperformed everything else on a per-scan-to-outcome basis. The useful comparison is fixture type against fixture type, not code against code. Compare shelf-edge scan-to-view ratios against checkout scan-to-completion rates, track which fixture type actually drives the highest-value action rather than the highest raw scan count, and set your scan-rate benchmark per fixture rather than as one number for the whole store. A checkout code that gets scanned by one in twenty queuing shoppers but converts nearly all of them into a loyalty signup is doing more for the business than a shelf code scanned by one in a hundred browsers who mostly bounce straight off the landing page.
